Harvester Island (my fishcamp on the west side of Kodiak)
I'm a creative nonfiction writer. My 8th book just released this fall. My essays have appeared in Orion, The Atlantic, Best Essays Northwest and many others. I write on a variety of subjects including commercial fishing, wilderness, the spirituality of food, parenting, and faith. Like many others, I am indeed an Alaska writer who embraces and is enlivened by my particular geography; yet at times I push against the limits that "Alaska" sometimes imposes, and write beyond place into other regions that we inhabit: the "places" of food, the "places" of faith, the "place" of family. I've just resigned from 6 years of graduate teaching (in CNF) to devote more time to writing, traveling and speaking.
